Courting The Beer Vote

In all sobriety, the Washington Post actually ran an article on Obama’s beer preferences and how he is using his love of beer to connect with the masses, particularly “middle-America independents.”

“According to Scarborough USA, 35 percent of these voters say they’ve had a beer in the past 30 days, compared with 30 percent of Democrats and 27 percent of Republicans,” writes Amy Gardner on August 14. “The numbers are even starker when focused on microbrews, with 45 percent of independents saying they drank one in the past month — and only 25 percent of Democrats and 23 percent of Republicans saying the same.”

“Hoppy days are here again: President Obama is making clear his love for beer on the campaign trail as he attempts to ferment a coalition of the swilling,” reads the blurb below a picture of Obama with a glass of beer and a crowd of drinkers.

Perhaps the campaign–and the press–should focus on more meaty issues, such as welfare reform, the economy, or even education policy.

On August 13 Gardner published an article with the Washington Post discussing how Obama had promised the government would purchase “up to $170 million worth of meat and poultry to aid farmers and ranchers struggling with a devastating drought this summer.”

The next day Gardner quotes Obama as saying “Yesterday I went to the State Fair, and I had a pork chop and a beer. And it was good. Today I just had a beer. I didn’t get the pork chop. But the beer was good, too.”

“As Obama and his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, battle for hearts and votes, Romney is trying to show that he shares their values of family, faith and hard work,” explains Gardner on August 14. “He talks of marrying his high school sweetheart, supporting his wife through her battle with multiple sclerosis, raising his five boys and enjoying his grandchildren.”

In contrast,

“Obama is taking it a step further by trying to seem an everyman himself. He talks of being raised by a single mom, his late father-in-law’s working-class career, his own family’s financial struggles in their early years.

And he talks about beer.”

Gardner informs us as well that Obama, who likes microbrews too, recently bought a beer-making kit for the White House with his personal funds. She alludes to the fact that Romney doesn’t consume alcohol, but avoids the religious reasons behind the candidate’s alcohol abstinence.

This isn’t the first time Obama has tried to conquer tough issues using beer. One might remember his “beer summit” between Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and police Sgt. James Crowley, meant to solve racial strife across the nation.

“Obama had a Bud Light, the same beer that White House staffers provided in a cooler on the press bus rumbling across Iowa this week. Most of the beer was left untouched,” writes Gardner. “It was apparently beneath the standards of the beer lovers who cover the president.”
